People stared at Bevin Elderberry and his creepy naked clown doll when passing by his table in the breakfast room of the hotel. Dishes clanked. There was a murmur of morning voices, and the air smelled of wet eggs and bacon. The plates of food before him didnโ€™t stir his appetite. He was too hungover.

โ€œYouโ€™re shaking,โ€ Jiggles said from across the table. He was sitting in the chair as if he was a real person.

โ€œI feel like shit,โ€ Bevin groaned. He took a careful sip of coffee from a trembling mug.

โ€œThatโ€™s what you get for drinking all that vodka last night, you big goof.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t lecture me. Youโ€™re not my mamaโ€ฆ You want any of this food? Itโ€™s making me want to vomit.โ€

Jiggles stretched his neck and looked. โ€œIโ€™ll take those scrambled eggs and maybe your muffin.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t say it like that.โ€

โ€œSay what like what?โ€

โ€œYour muffin. It sounds sexual.โ€

โ€œGeez, man. Homophobic much? You are the most uptight person I ever met.โ€

โ€œWell, you wonโ€™t have to put up with my sorry ass for much longer,โ€ Bevin let him know. โ€œIโ€™m taking you back to the antique store right after weโ€™re done here.โ€

โ€œWhat if I donโ€™t want to go?โ€

โ€œTough shit. You and I are parting ways, today.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m an autonomous soul,โ€ Jiggles let it be known. โ€œYou canโ€™t tell me where to go and what to do.โ€

โ€œAnd Iโ€™m bigger than you. Much bigger than you. I could punt your sorry ass to the next county if I wanted to.โ€

Jiggles folded his naked arms and brooded. โ€œYouโ€™re not a very nice person. Maybe thatโ€™s why your girlfriend dumped you.โ€

Bevin picked up a short stack of pancakes with his bare hand and threw it right in Jigglesโ€™ face. โ€œShut up about my life! You donโ€™t know anything.โ€

โ€œWhat the hell, dude! You got syrup in my hair. Donโ€™t you know how important a clownโ€™s hair is?โ€

โ€œIโ€™ve pretty much had it with you and your stupid clown hair,โ€ Bevin made clear. Clean yourself up. Weโ€™re leaving.โ€

When they arrived at the antique store, Bevin was stunned. It was closed. He peered in the big front window, and it was empty inside. All the merchandise was gone. The lights were off.

โ€œWhat the hell,โ€ he muttered in confusion. โ€œHow can this be?โ€ He looked down at Jiggles. โ€œDid you have anything to do with this!?โ€ Bevin demanded to know. โ€œIs this some weird magic of yours?โ€

Jiggles grinned. โ€œNo. I didnโ€™t do anything. Maybe itโ€™s karma coming to bite you on the ass.โ€

Bevin threw his hands in the air. โ€œGreat! I suppose it doesnโ€™t matter, though. Iโ€™ll just leave you here. Go my own way. So long.โ€

Bevin turned to walk away.

โ€œWait!โ€ Jiggles cried out.

โ€œWhat now?โ€

โ€œCan I have a hug?โ€

โ€œNo.โ€

โ€œPlease. Just one hug and then youโ€™ll never see me again.โ€

โ€œUghโ€ฆ Fine.โ€

Bevin knelt down and Jiggles came to him, and they hugged.

They released each other and Bevin stood up. โ€œTake it easy,โ€ he said, and he turned and walked away. He stopped once and looked back. Jiggles the naked clown doll was still there, waving goodbye as he watched him leave. Bevin turned back around and ran as fast as he could.

When he reached the town library, Bevin stopped running and went inside. He decided he wanted to look at some books about area hiking trails. He asked the sexy librarian, and she showed him the section. โ€œShe can show me her section,โ€ he thought aloud in his crazy mind.

He found a quiet table and went through a couple of the books. Once he had gathered the information he wanted, he shelved the books and went back to the circulation desk to talk to the sexy librarian. He discovered her name was Jennifer.

โ€œWell, Jennifer,โ€ Bevin began. โ€œAny hiking trails in the area you would recommend?โ€

She pushed her glasses closer to her face. โ€œIโ€™m not much of an outdoors person. I like to read in bed. I would stay in bed all day every day if I could. With my cat.โ€

โ€œOhhh,โ€ Bevin said. โ€œI like to be in bed, too. Maybe we can spend some time in bed together. You could read to me while I eat some grapes without a shirt on.โ€

Jennifer frowned. โ€œThatโ€™s the weirdest thing any guy has ever said to me.โ€

โ€œDo a lot of guys come in here to check you out?โ€ Bevin laughed at his own play on words.

Jennifer mocked him with some snarky laughter. โ€œNo. People come in here to read and study and get information. Itโ€™s not a nightclub. Now, if you donโ€™t mind, I have to get back to work.โ€

โ€œCan I come behind the counter and pretend I work here?โ€

โ€œNo.โ€

โ€œWould you like to go to lunch with me?โ€

Jennifer looked at him and considered it. Jennifer was a penny pincher and took any opportunity she could to get a free meal or anything else for that matter. โ€œYes. I will go to lunch with you. Come back here at noon to pick me up.โ€

โ€œSweet!โ€ Bevin declared. โ€œIโ€™ll see you at high noon.โ€

Bevin raced back to the hotel. He showered, brushed his teeth, and changed his clothes. When he got back to the library, Jennifer was out front and looking at her watch.

โ€œHi there,โ€ Bevin said with an eager smile.

โ€œItโ€™s 12:03. Youโ€™re three minutes late,โ€ Jennifer said with all seriousness.

โ€œItโ€™s just three minutes,โ€ Bevin told her.

โ€œThree minutes is three minutes. Thatโ€™s three minutes of my entire life that Iโ€™ll never get back.โ€

โ€œGeez, Iโ€™m sorry.โ€

โ€œLetโ€™s go. Follow me. I know a nice little lunch place around the corner, and don’t dawdle.โ€

Bevin reached out to try and hold her hand as they walked. She immediately yanked it away. โ€œI donโ€™t hold hands on a first date,โ€ Jennifer let it be known. โ€œAnd I definitely donโ€™t kiss or have intercourse.โ€

โ€œOkay. Thanks for letting me know,โ€ Bevin said with a hint of sarcasm.

They got a table for two by a window. The place was called Leoโ€™s Lunch Bistro. They looked over the menu in silence until Bevin asked, โ€œWhatโ€™s good to eat here?โ€

Jennifer feigned a smile. โ€œThe Reuben sandwich is good.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not a big fan of sauerkraut.โ€

โ€œPerhaps a boring chicken sandwich would suit you more,โ€ Jennifer scoffed, and then she looked around to see if anyone was watching before she grabbed the salt and pepper shakers and stowed them in her purse.

Bevin was surprised. โ€œWait. Did you just put the salt and pepper shakers in your purse?โ€

Jennifer leaned forward and whispered. โ€œYes. They have plenty of them. They donโ€™t care.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m sure somebody cares.โ€

She rolled her eyes at him and shook her head before swiping up the mustard bottle and putting that in her purse as well.

โ€œWhat are you doing?โ€ Bevin wanted to know. โ€œThatโ€™s stealing.โ€

โ€œStealing? Businesses steal from us every day,โ€ Jennifer snipped. โ€œNobody is going to miss a little mustard.โ€

โ€œDo you even like mustard?โ€

โ€œI love mustard,โ€ she answered.

โ€œWhy donโ€™t you marry it then,โ€ Bevin teased.

โ€œSo funny. Why donโ€™t you stop acting like youโ€™re in the fifth grade.โ€

โ€œGeez. Iโ€™m just trying to lighten the mood while youโ€™re pilfering everything.โ€

โ€œShhh, here comes the waitress.โ€

โ€œHi guys, my name is Stephanie and Iโ€™ll be taking care of you today. Can I start you off with something to drink.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll just have water,โ€ Jennifer said.

โ€œIโ€™ll have a lemonade.โ€

โ€œGreat. Any appetizers?โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ Jennifer answered. โ€œBut could you bring us two loaves of your bread. Itโ€™s just so darn delicious.โ€

โ€œOf course,โ€ the waitress named Stephanie said and she smiled before turning away.

Bevin leaned forward and angrily whispered, โ€œYouโ€™re going to steal that extra loaf of bread arenโ€™t you?โ€

โ€œI want it for a snack later. Could you hand me the dish of those wrapped butter pads?โ€

Bevin reluctantly did as he was asked, and she dumped the contents of the dish into her purse.

โ€œWhat if they melt all over the place?โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t worry about itโ€ฆ And, you are paying for this lunch, right?โ€

โ€œUm, yes?โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re the one who asked me outโ€ฆ I need some toilet paper at home so Iโ€™m going to use the restroom. Please order me the grilled cheese sandwich with a bowl of tomato soup.โ€

As soon as Jennifer vanished into the realm of the restrooms, Bevin decided he was going to vanish as well. He was done with her. He left no money. He left no note of explanation. He just left.
