The Window by the Sea

Open window overlooking the sea at twilight from a cozy sitting room

I was sitting by an open window

Some death ocean vibe all around

I think about the aches and pains of life

The doldrums, the panic and anxiety

As I look out over the water topped with a dab of sunset cream

The room where I sit is blue-purple

The chair wood and wicker

The thin tin curtain pulled aside three-quarters of the way

The only sound being the quiet sea just living in that massive void upon the Earth

I wondered if this was a view of death or life

I’m growing older so now I think of those things

Of not being alive, of not being a part of the world any longer

It makes my guts shiver

What will be on the other side?

An unconscious blackness that I’m not even aware of

Will it be like before being born—complete nothingness?

Will I see sidewalks and smell grass?

Will I be someone completely different?

The sea does not answer my shadowy prayers

I thought she was psychic

Like the woman down at the pier with her square table and crystal ball

Her face was pale, her eyes a sparkling gray

She told me to sit by a window in a blue-purple room of stucco and scars

Wait until the night comes, she said

Then wish upon the universe

Point your eyes up and there you will see

The place you were always meant to be.
